Free legal aid provided by the UHHRU for residents of the areas bordering the ATO zone

Responding to new challenges caused by the difficult situation in the East of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union (UHHRU) with the support of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Human Rights in Action Activity has additionally opened three new legal aid centers in the cities located close to the conflict zone: Mariupol, Krasnoarmiysk and Kryvyi Rih.

Monitoring visit “Monitoring of human rights violations of citizens of Svatove as a result of improper storage of ammunition”

On November 3-7 the USAID ”Human Rights in Action” Activity has conducted monitoring visit “Monitoring of human rights violations of citizens of Svatove (destruction of local infrastructure, physical injuries) as a result of improper storage of ammunition”: UHHRU monitors have visited the town of Svatove, Luhansk region. The main objectives of the visit were as follows: to inquire the victims of the explosion of ammunition storages, and to document the actual destructions of local infrastructure.

Adoption of bill No. 2166 is the great victory of human rights defenders

Seven months of fight for the law on forcibly displaced persons, then another year of fight for adoption of this law in a perfect form, and then a victory! On November 3, 2015, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted our bill No. 2166. The law that all this time was being prepared by human rights organisations in cooperation with UNHCR and members of parliament. Currently, compromises are abandoned and we have an exemplary law fully complies with international standards.

Human rights defenders claim: journalists’ activity in the East of Ukraine is restricted both by illegal armed groups and state institutions that hinder the professional work of media staff and censor their information. Apart from that, there are numerous cases of beating, unlawful arrests, detention, and even murders of journalists.

Open appeal of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union regarding the creation of a Public Council attached to the Interior Ministry

On Sunday 27 January 2013 a general meeting was held to form a Public Council attached to the Interior Ministry. This resulted in twenty five of the 35 representatives of civic institutions allowed to the meeting, among them a member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union being elected.

On Flagrant Violation of Freedom of Expression in Kharkiv

On 13 September 2011 three Kharkiv TV companies – ATN, Fora and ATVC – were simultaneously removed from air. All three are engaged in independent journalist activities and regularly broadcast criticism of the local authorities and various State bodies. The simultaneous silencing under various pretexts of these three TV companies makes it impossible to doubt the political commissioning of the move.
