The son of the former Acting Minister of Defence in Yulia Tymoshenko's government, Valery Ivashchenko has turned to diplomatic missions and international organizations over the deterioration in his father's health.

According to Serhiy Ivashchenko, the doctors consider that his father's existing medical problems have been seriously exacerbated by his period of detention in a SIZO [pre-trial detention centre]. A back complaint has worsened, causing loss of feeling in the toes and feet. A number of new complaints have developed in the SIZO, some of which have become chronic conditions. The doctors are unequivocal in concluding that Valery Ivashchenko's state of health has worsened and that he needs comprehensive and planned treatment in a neurological hospital.

The doctors also recommend a number of additional blood tests to ascertain why there is an increased amount of glucose in the blood since this could indicate sugar diabetes.

Serhiy Ivashchenko writes that since the final diagnosis was made on 18 July 2011, his father has not received medical care at all, despite having made several written applications to the SIZO Administration. Nor, he stresses, would it be possible for his father to receive the appropriate treatment in the SIZO which has neither a neurologist nor neurology department.

As reported, Valery Ivashchenko has been in detention for over a year. He is charged with having, in November 2009 while Acting Minister of Defence abused his position by signing a plan to sell the Feodosia Marine Engineering Works which was property of the Ministry of Defence. Please see the Second Preliminary Report by the Danish Helsinki Committee on Human Rights, where Valery Ivashchenko's case is one of those examined.
