Tymoshenko stopped from meeting OSCE delegation because of hunger strike

The Penitentiary Service of Ukraine on Tuesday refused to allow imprisoned former Prime Minister and opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko from meeting with the head of the OSCE Observer Mission despite permission having been given earlier.

Election Day: 18 infringements of journalists’ rights

The Institute for Mass Information reports that on Election Day there were 16 reported cases where journalists were obstructed when carrying out their work. There was also one attack on a journalist and a case involving indirect pressure.

Dodgy Election Techniques: Keeping the Voter uninformed

Efforts to ensure that all infringements on Election Day in Ukraine were reported hit a major hurdle at around 14.00 with a number of sites coming under a DDoS attack. The most prominent election monitors – OPORA and the Committee of Voters of Ukraine [CVU] – were clearly targeted however the hackers did not stop there. As late as 22.00 the sites of the CVU, www.electioninfo.org.ua the Kharkiv Human Rights Group and presumably others were still down.

Public sector workers complain of being coerced to vote for Party of the Regions

In the Krasnogvardiysk District of Dnipropetrovsk civil servants say that they and their relatives are being forced to vote for the Party of the Regions. Members of staff of the territorial social services centre say that they were made to give written statements of support for the Party of the Regions at the elections and to provide personal data.

Andriy Krisko, Head of the Crimean Branch of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine [CVU] reports that the current parliamentary election campaign has been characterized by the widespread use of black PR methods, manipulation of information and bribing of voters.

Memorandum on standards of coverage of election campaign

Internews Ukraine and the Institute for the Development of the Regional Press have drawn up a Memorandum on Standards of Coverage of the Election Campaign. The Memorandum was discussed and supported by the journalist community in the Crimea; the Mykolaiv, Odessa and Kherson oblasts.

CEC prohibits voting outside electoral district

The Central Election Commission has tightened the rules for obtaining voting papers to vote in the October parliamentary elections. Now voters who have not changed their electoral address will not be able to vote outside their own electoral district.

OPORA accuses CEC of destroying the system of mutual control on commissions

In a worrying move, the Central Election Commission has changed its rules on the draw for precinct electoral commission members bringing this closer to the system for district electoral commissions already slammed by election monitoring groups.

CVU condemns politically motivated verdict against Volodymyr Struk

The Luhansk Regional Branch of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine views the verdict issued on 17 July against Volodymyr Struk to be politically motivated. Its real aim is to prevent a popular politician from taking part in the parliamentary elections in single-mandate electoral district No. 104.

Andriy Mahera: Without changes to electoral law, the results may be challenged in court

The Deputy Head of the Central Election Commission [CEC] has told Radio Svoboda that if certain amendments to the Law on the Parliamentary Elections are not made, the results could be questioned in the courts. He says that none of the changes which the CEC is insisting on touch the elements of the political compromise reached between the ruling majority and opposition.
