Today two Crimean Tatar activists have been arrested in the occupied Crimea:

On May 21, 2018 two Crimean Tatar activists, Edem Smailov and Server Mustafaev, have been detained after illegal searches of their houses occurred in the Kremlin-controlled Crimea.

According to the statement made thus far by occupational authorities, both activists are being suspected of belonging to the banned in Russia Hizb-ut Tahrir organization. However, UHHRU believes in politically-motivated nature of these cases, especially taking into consideration that Server Mustafaev is being a human rights defender and one of coordinators of the Crimean Solidarity civic initiative created to protect victims of human rights abuse in the peninsular.

UHHRU strictly condemns persecution of activists and urges Kremlin-led occupation authorities to stop violations of human rights.
A corresponding statement is to be issued soon. Press-briefing of the Mejlis leader MP Refat Chubarov is to follow today at 4 p.m.
