The third issue of analytical review of human rights “Crimea Beyond Rules” is published for your attention. This time the topic of analysis was the right to citizenship in the occupied peninsula.

Experts of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights, Regional Center for Human Rights and the expert-analytical group CHROT studied the problem of the right to citizenship in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol city experiencing three years of Russian occupation.

The question of the right to citizenship is considered in several aspects – the situation according to international standards, judicial precedents in practice of international judiciary, analysis of legal acts of the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Also, the publication includes historical materials on citizenship issues, examples of Crimean cases, and analytical conclusions.

The review includes the analysis of the situation of forced acquisition of citizenship in cases of Oleh Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko. Offenses in these proceedings were analyzed. Lawyer Serhii Zaiets calls the forced acquisition of citizenship as human rights violation and means to implement the aggressive expansion in the context of the occupation of Crimea.

The question of compulsion was analyzed in details. The situation with the refusal of the Russian citizenship in the review compared with the same situation that occurred in the former Yugoslavia.
