On June 1, 2017, the Ukrainian Institute for the Future hosted the roundtable on “Justice after De-occupation: The World’s Practice.”
Guests of the event were the authors of the baseline survey with the application of transitional justice in Ukraine – Oleh Martynenko and Alla Blaha, analysts of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, Yaroslav Melnyk, professor of the T.Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Nataliia Satokhina, a lecturer of Y. Mudryi National Law Academy, and Oleksandr Evseev, an expert of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, who moderated the event.
Also, MP Anton Herashchenko, one of the founders of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, Dovydas Vitkauskas, an expert on strategic planning of the EU project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”, and Denys Monastyrskyi, an expert of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, attended the event.
Participants talked about the need for a comprehensive implementation of the concept of Transitional Justice in the context of de-occupation of Crimea and the separate regions of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. Experts believe that it should be used in conjunction its classic components: application of criminal justice to perpetrators, truth-telling, compensation for damages in full, and institutional reforms. The second main thesis of the study’s authors is that Ukraine should create own recipe for transitional justice, given the current international experience.
