On August 11-12, 2018, a training entitled Interaction with the Population, and Police Work during the Reintegration of Regions after Armed Conflicts took place in Mariupol. The event was organized by the Kharkiv Institute for Social Research with the support of the UNDP.
As part of the training, police officers got acquainted with such newish areas of police work as fake news in the media and social networks; effects of propaganda and how to resist it; searching for ways to interact with the population that is under the influence of propaganda; specifics of police work after armed conflicts; and activities aimed at ensuring peace and security in conflict-affected areas.
The training was attended by Oleg Martynenko, head of the analytics department of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union. The expert conducted a session entitled Conflict Communication with Citizens: Tactics of Behavior. The session was based both on the personal professional experience of the participant of peacekeeping missions, as well as on the analysis of best practices of police work in addressing the problems of local communities. Police chiefs also learned about strategic approaches to post-conflict settlement that are a responsibility of the security sector.
