Police officers suspended after another detainee dies in custody

The Head of the Kyiv Police Oleksy Krykun has suspended the management of the Sviatoshynsky District Police Station in Kyiv where a person suspected of murder died on 9 February. The officers who interrogated the man have also been suspended.
This was reported on Thursday at a press briefing given by the Head of the Public Liaison Centre of the Kyiv Police, V. Polishchuk.
He said that a report had been received the day before of a body found on the stairs of a building in the Sviatoshynsky District. Police detained a 61-year-old man living in the same block and took him to the police station.
Mr Polishchuk asserts that during the documenting of explanations, the man suddenly fell ill and the police officers called an ambulance which arrived in 10-11 minutes. The doctors tried to resuscitate the man but to no avail.
The preliminary conclusion of the doctors is that the man died of coronary heart failure.
However the forensic examination which is still underway showed that the 61-year-old from Kyiv had a blunt injury to the stomach and cuts on his arms. The man also suffered from cirrhosis of the liver.
Polishchuk also spoke of reports from neighbours that the man drank consistently and there were always scandals and fights in his fat. The head of the Sviatoshynsky District Police Station Yury Hladyk denied that physical force had been used by police offers.
