We continue to publish the annual “Human Rights in Ukraine” report, prepared by human rights organizations. The report contains the most up-o-date research in the field of human rights and fundamental freedoms of last year.

Yevhen Zakharov, Director of the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group, has prepared an article devoted to the issue of the Security Service of Ukraine and human rights.
In the publication, the author outlines human rights problems of SSU between 2014-2016. For example, the status of SSU that allows both to be secret service and law enforcement. Also, he analyzes changes that have occurred in recent years during the work of the Security Service.
The large part of the article is devoted to human rights violations, committed by the Security Service in 2014-2016. In particular, abuse during arrest, detention and stay in custody; violations during an investigation and breach in matters of extradition, expulsion, and a return of foreigners and stateless persons. A separate unit of publication considers the fight against the so-called “pension tourism.”
Yevhen Zakharov also offers a number of recommendations, including the amendments to the laws concerning SSU. For example, one of the points about the development of an open list of information on an exchange of prisoners.
