The United Nations urged Ukraine to struggle with the crisis, not with the social guarantees
17.06.2014
The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights called on the Ukrainian officials to fight with the crisis without reducing social protection for disadvantaged Ukrainians. This is stated in the conclusive recommendations of the Committee.
"Unfortunately, the tradition of Ukrainian officials is to fight with economic crisis in such a manner that the least protected people are suffering from it the most. And the UN Committee reiterated this regularity. So once again we would like to remind the Government not only about the implementation of its international obligations, but also about the effects of economic crisis on the most vulnerable individuals. And accordingly, the Government should do everything possible in order to avoid narrowing the minimum social guarantees for these people. I hope that the new Government realizes this", – mentioned Maxim Shcherbatyuk, the program director of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.
