On June 26, 2018, participants of the Open World program held a videoconference with American court experts.

In April 2018, delegates of the Open World Program went to the state of Tennessee, USA, as part of the Working with Veterans program. The program was joined by Vitaliya Lebid, lawyer of UHHRU Strategic Litigation Center. Yesterday, the America House Kyiv Group held the first video conference with the U.S. side regarding the Veterans Treatment Court program. The program aims to exclude those with mental health issues from the traditional justice system.

Other UHHRU representatives also participated in the videoconference, since this topic is extremely relevant in the context of transitional justice, and the experience of the United States with veterans may be useful to Ukraine.

As a result of the meeting, the participants agreed on further cooperation. In particular, we plan to hold the next videoconference with U.S. judges who possess experience working with veterans programs. We also intend to promote the idea of veteran-oriented justice in Ukraine among potential stakeholders – politicians, judges, lawyers and NGOs. We also discussed the possibility of Ukrainian representatives’ participation in the conference in Nashville, Tennessee, dedicated to the issue of veterans-oriented judges, which will be held next year.
