On June 13, 2018, UHHRU analytics expert and Doctor of Law Sciences Alla Blaha visited Kyiv Cooperative Institute of Business and Law. The analyst met with 2nd year lawyers-to-be and told them about the main activities of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union and the latest trends in the field of human rights protection.
Alla Blaha spoke in detail about the issues of transitional justice related to the prospect of retrieving the occupied territories. The participants, among other things, discussed issues important for lawyers in the process of bringing the perpetrators of mass violations to justice and punishing them for the crimes committed; reparations for the victims; truth-telling; thorough investigations of violations that took place during the conflict or were oppressive; institutional reforms of state bodies, courts, law enforcement and armed forces; and their vetting, which should ensure nonrecurrence of such violations.
Among other issues that interested the students and were highlighted during the meeting were the situation and challenges of gender equality in Ukraine, women-perpetrated crimes, and human rights activities of NGOs.
We are grateful to Head of Learning Practice, Doctor of Law, Head of the Law Department of the Kyiv Cooperative Institute of Business and Law Oleksiy Pronevych for his initiative to hold this event, and to Provost of the Institute, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Tetyana Kaminska for her support.
