Ukraine versus Russia at the European Court of Human Rights: Is Crimea a Special Case?
25 January 13:00-14:30
On 14 January 2021 the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found Ukraine’s case versus Russia concerning Crimea admissible before it. During the next stages, the Court will consider the specific human rights abuses perpetrated in Crimea and Russia’s alleged responsibility for them.
Questions for discussion:
– What role does this case play in Ukraine’s lawfare against Russia and persons acting under its control?
– How does the Crimea admissibility decision stand out among other cases concerning occupied territories?
– What influenced the considerable length of the proceedings?
– How might the Court’s approach to Crimea impact states’ extraterritorial human rights obligations?
Speakers:
Ivan Lishchyna, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister for Justice – Government Agent before the ECtHR
Dr Marko Milanović, Professor of Public International Law, University of Nottingham

This event launches the video-version of #InternationalLawTalks – a series of webinars aimed to facilitate qualitative, interesting and accessible discussions on the topical issues of international law in Ukraine.
For each session, the webinars will bring together distinguished professionals from Ukraine and abroad. They will contextualise the armed conflict, peace and transitional justice issues in Ukraine within the larger dynamics of international law and international relations.
The aim of the project is twofold: to help Ukrainian legal professionals and the general public see the wider horizons of their native context and to provide more local and regional insight to international colleagues.
A series of webinars #InternationalLawTalks is made possible thanks to USAID Human Rights in Action Program.
