Results of monitoring visit to neuropsychiatric boarding houses to which the wards from residential institutions of the ATO area were evacuated

On April 27-28, 2015, four monitors visited Veselokutivskyi Neuropsychiatric Boarding House (NPBH) (Kirovohrad region) and Illinskyi NPBH (Dnipropetrovsk region) to determine the impact of relocation of NPBH patients from ATO area on quality of their life, the state of compliance of the rights of both displaced persons and those wards who joined the new group and have already been receiving services.

The Book “The Fear Peninsula” Describing What Happened to Crimea during a Year Was Presented in Kyiv

The publication “The Fear Peninsula: Chronicle of Occupation and Violation of Human Rights in Crimea” (the authors – Serhii Zaiets, Oleksandra Matviichuk, Tetiana Pechonchyk, Daria Svyrydova and Olha Skrypnyk) was presented in Kyiv. The book contains the results of work of Ukrainian human rights organisations, in particular, the analysis of violations of international law in connection with the occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol by troops of the Russian Federation, the list of main resolutions of international bodies assessing these events, as well as the documentary evidence of human rights violations on the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea in the period from February 2014 to March 2015.

How Were Human Rights Violated in 2014?

74 experts of human rights organisations from all regions of Ukraine participated in drawing up of the Report “Human Rights in Ukraine 2014” which provides a professional assessment of observance by the state of human rights in the situation of armed conflict, economic crisis and large-scale reform processes. The information contained in the report is annually used by the European Court, the US Government, the European Commission and other international institutions.

Petition of human rights organisations of Ukraine on threats of law-making initiatives regarding cancellation of a bail

The new Criminal Procedure Code which was adopted in 2012 was estimated by international institutions as excellent. According to the current Criminal Procedure Code, detention is an exceptional preventive measure. In cases when a grave violent crime is not involved, application of alternative preventive measures towards the suspect is envisaged. Bail is one of them.

A human rights activist checked whether there are posters on rights of persons who cross the administrative border with the Autonomous Republic of Crimea at Chonhar

In autumn, during a campaign against impunity of Ukrainian border guards on the Crimean strait, we managed to draw the attention of the administration of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine to this problem. Subsequently, a number of suggestions for improving the situation on the checkpoints has been developed. For instance, it was offered to place posters for persons who cross the administrative border between Crimea and the mainland and approve a form of the resolution of the State Border Guard Service on denial to entry into the mainland Ukraine.

Human rights activists instructed activists on recording human rights violations and war crimes in the East of Ukraine

Human Rights in Action USAID Program, which is implemented by the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, conducted training, attended by over 30 activists giving regular visits to the ATO area in order to detect and record human rights violations and war crimes.

A Former Policeman Won More than 5 Thousand Euro in the European Court

A former policeman Viacheslav Baryshevskyi spent 2 years in a pretrial detention centre waiting for a trial. Ukrainian judges were slow to consider his case. Neither did they consider it necessary to release him.
