Responding to new challenges caused by the difficult situation in the East of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union (UHHRU) with the support of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Human Rights in Action Activity has additionally opened three new legal aid centers in the cities located close to the conflict zone: Mariupol, Krasnoarmiysk and Kryvyi Rih.

On November 3-7 the USAID ”Human Rights in Action” Activity has conducted monitoring visit “Monitoring of human rights violations of citizens of Svatove (destruction of local infrastructure, physical injuries) as a result of improper storage of ammunition”: UHHRU monitors have visited the town of Svatove, Luhansk region. The main objectives of the visit were as follows: to inquire the victims of the explosion of ammunition storages, and to document the actual destructions of local infrastructure.

The girl was detained in June 2015 in the city of Donetsk. She was detained in captivity for 41 day. She was beaten, tortured by hunger, thirst. The conditions of detention were deliberately made worse. Death threats, threats of torture to mother and grandmother were made. There was anti-Semitic speech toward her. She was forces with deceit to give some false interviews to media of the DPR and Russia following the prepared script in exchange for freedom.

On 25 August 2015 the President of Ukraine approved by Order No. 501/2015 the National Strategy in the Sphere of Human Rights and instructed the Cabinet of Ministers with involvement of representatives of state authorities, civil society institutes, leading Ukrainian scientists and international experts to approve the Action Plan on Implementation of the National Strategy in the Sphere of Human Rights within three months for the period until 2020.

On September 15-19 the USAID ”Human Rights in Action” Activity has conducted monitoring visit “Freedom of speech in the ATO area” to Donetsk region (the city of Kramatorsk, Mariupol and Konstantynivka). The main objectives of the visit were as follows: to monitor the media and to establish preliminary contact with potential clients; to interview journalists and editors of local editions; to find other witnesses of events; to establish contact with former employees who left as IDPs; to interview the families of the dead, missing persons.

The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union is outraged by another episode of suppression of freedom of expression in the Advocacy of Ukraine. UHHRU expressed its concern with attempts of the management of the National Association of Advocates of Ukraine to bring the Director of the Coordinating Centre for Legal Aid Providing, Andrii Vyshnevskyi, to disciplinary responsibility for his expressing thoughts and judgements with regards to the situation in the Advocacy.

I got an invitation from the National Association of Advocates of Ukraine to participate in its forum “Protection of Human Rights in a Criminal Procedure: Proof and Evidences”. The forum is held by the NAAU with support of the project of the Council of Europe “Support to Criminal Justice System Reform in Ukraine” (launched under the financial support of the Government of Denmark) and a shared project of the European Union and the Council of Europe “Consolidation of Justice Sector Policy Development in Ukraine”.
